Track work safety (Turva)

This training programme prepares the participants for moving and working safely in and around railway environments without risk to railway transport. This training is required for individuals who need to move and work in a railway area that is part of the Finnish Transport Agency’s railway network.

Course content:

  • Railway network management and authorities
  • Basic concepts of railway systems
  • Specification of location
  • Track work
  • Basics of safety guard procedure
  • Special characteristics and risks of railway systems
  • Introduction to electrified railways
  • Actions in case of incidents and accidents
  • Theory test

The training programme consists of a theoretical part and a test. The duration of the training is one day. Theory part consists of 8 lessons. One lesson is 45 minutes.
After successfully completing the training, the participants will obtain a track work safety qualification which is valid for five years (until the end of the calendar year).

Basics of railway systems (PERA)

This training programme focuses on the technical principles of a railway transport system as well as Finnish railway infrastructure solutions. The training discusses the technical instructions issued by the Finnish Transport Agency as the state’s infrastructure manager as well as the underlying international regulations and standardisations.

The training is part of the preliminary requirements for all job-specific qualifications.

The training also serves as technical basic training for those working in state railway network planning and other expert positions.

A track work safety qualification (Turva) is a requirement for the participants.

The training programme consists of a theoretical part, a site visit and a test. The duration of the training is three days. The theoretical part consists of 16 lessons, the site visit 6 lessons and the test two lessons. One lesson is 45 minutes.

The training programme does not offer a qualification. The training is valid indefinitely.

Safety guard (T-mies)

This training programme prepares the participants for working as safety guards on the state railway network and as road traffic guards at level crossings.

The participants are required to have at least three months of experience working in a railway area.

Other requirements:

  • Track work safety qualification (Turva)
  • Basics of railway systems
  • Valid Road Safety 1 or Road Safety 2 qualification when working as a road traffic guard at a level crossing,
  • Certificate of medical fitness for the job

The training programme consists of a theoretical part and a test. The duration of the training is one day. Theory part consists of 8 lessons. One lesson is 45 minutes.

The qualification is valid for five years and has to be renewed by the end of the expiry year.

Track work manager (RTV)

This training programme prepares the participants for working as a manager responsible for safety during track work.

Basic requirements defined by the Finnish Transport Agency:

  • Track work safety qualification (Turva)
  • Basics of railway systems (PERA)
  • At least six months of practical experience of on-site work related to railway maintenance
  • Certificate of medical fitness for the job

In order to obtain the qualification, the participants must meet the health-related requirements defined by the Finnish Transport Agency.

The training programme consists of a theoretical part and a test. The duration of the training is eight days. Theory part consists of 55 lessons. One lesson is 45 minutes. In addition, the participants must complete work samples in accordance with the training card and take part in a practical test.

The qualification is valid indefinitely and can be maintained by taking part in the refresher training on a yearly basis.

The content of the training programme will be specified during the summer and autumn in accordance with the Finnish Transport Agency’s instructions.

Refresher training for track work managers (RTVk)

The course goes through the aspects needed to maintain a track work manager qualification.

The course takes one day and updates a track work manager’s qualification for a calendar year.

Signalling system technician (TAS)

The training will take place at the Finnish Transport Agency’s technical training centre and more information will be available in the autumn of 2018. On this page you can find basic information about the course.

The training programme prepares the participants for signalling system installation work as well as maintenance and repair.
A person with a further qualification for rail traffic safety device fitters can apply for a signalling system technician qualification after completing the theory part of the training programme as well as the related skills demonstration.

Basic requirements:

Vocational qualification in electrical and automation engineering With regard to electric signalling systems, the qualification requirements comply with the Electrical Safety Act and the related Ministry of Trade and Industry decision and its amendments.

With regard to experience, the minimum requirement is three months of guided training in signalling system work under the guidance of a person with a signalling system technician qualification.

  • Occupational safety card
  • Basics of railway systems (PERA)
  • Electrical work safety training (SFS 6002)
  • Live working qualification

In addition, before applying for the qualification, the participant must complete the Finnish Transport Agency’s course on automatic train protection (ATP).

The total duration of the training is 10 days. The theory parts consist of 80 lessons. One lesson is 45 minutes. The course includes a preliminary assignment, training and a practical test.
